FEATURED ARTISTS & SCHOLARS

The feature articles listed below honor and highlight artists and scholars, who have an outstanding position in the field of Digital / Media Arts, and who have taken the time to comprehensively document their work and activities on ADA. 

Diana Domingues, a pioneering artist-engineer, scholar, and researcher from Brazil, has impacted and shaped the landscape of electronic art in Latin America. By bridging the realms of intangible culture and rituals within Latin American native traditions, her work explores the intricate connections between these cultural practices and the transformative potential of everyday technology.

George Legrady has exhibited across the world and is widely recognized as one of the early digital artists that researched the semiotic and cultural implications of software-produced images. His work encompasses a wide range of digital experiments from digital graphics to data-based analysis, not to mention his advanced research on data visualizations and 3D rendering.

Lin Pey Chwen’s oeuvre extends from sculpture to interactive digital installations. Over the course of more than twenty years, her work encompasses a unique approach to media art and technology exploring a critical understanding of contemporary society, feminism and ecological crisis.

Eduardo Kac, pioneer of multiple art genres like Telematic Art, Transgenic Art and Bio Art, guides us through 40 years of radical changes in the body-technology relationship, offering different approaches on how to reflect the boundaries of human life.

Elke Reinhuber's work focuses on decision making processes and counterfactual thoughts in media arts. As a decidophobic in her own life, she explores in particular alternative layers of the here and now with immersive environments and expanded photography.

Acevedo’s visual music explores the implications of synesthesia through computer animated geometry.

Suzanne Anker’s practice investigates the ways in which nature is being altered in the 21st century.

Claudia Robles Angel’s artistic work is centered around the human organic body, specifically its internal imperceptible vibrations, pulsations, and fluctuations.

 

 

Bill Seaman’s artistic method is rooted in a transdisciplinary approach of collaboration with artists, scientists, philosophers, and designers.

Uršula Berlot's works deal with modellings of physicality, microbiology, and radiology as well as light, simulacrum and magnetism.

Interested in the poetry and the metaphysics of new technologies. Maurice Benayoun has created a series of award-wining works that probe the expressive power of new technologies to ask question about the world.

The wide spectrum of Andres Burbano’s research projects includes: media archaeology of Latin America, 3D-modelling of Photogrammetry technology and data-translation into digital media

Co-founder of several media art research projects and artist residency programmes, including Art-A-Hack and ThoughtWorks Arts Residency.

Menezes' artworks address the anthropocentric (human-centred) view on animals and nature, and question human intervention into biological processes such as gene manipulation.

Lanfranco Aceti’s extensive interdisciplinary research focuses on a variety of subjects such as transmedia, inter-semiotic translations between traditional and new media and digital hybridization processes and digital activism. 

Simon Biggs research topics vary from augmented reality, performance environments to electronic writing and data analysis, where he focuses on the influence of digitisation on our bodily perception between artificial intelligence, phenomenology, and semiotics.

Fragmentation, remixing and modification of texts and images are central in Jody Zellen installations and challenge participants to question their perception mechanisms.

Working with recent studies from genetic biology, geophysics and other scientific disciplines, Kisseleva finds conflicts in a process and, where possible, proposes a solution.

 

 

Jeffrey SHAW has been a pioneer and leading figure in new media art since its emergence. In the context of the 1960’s paradigm of installation he started with expanded cinema, performance and participatory environments,

Cubitt’s research focuses on the history of visual technologies, media art history, and relationships between environmental and post-colonial criticism of film and media.

 

 

NEIDICH works with sound and light installations, photography and film as well as internet downloads and software. His art works portray history in its narrativity and question the meaning of subjectivity in the new media, always analyzing the cognitive and ergonomic influence on both, something NEIDICH refers to as 'Neurobiopolitics'.

Tamas Waliczky works won numerous international awards, including the Golden Nica of Prix Ars Electronica, Linz, was shown in several exhibitions worldwide, including the Biennial of Lyon, the ICC Gallery Tokyo, the Multimediale Karlsruhe or the Biennial of Seville, and are in different public collections, like the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris) or the Ludwig Museum (Budapest).

 

 

 BEIGUELMAN’s artworks reflect on urbanity and community as seen through digital media and have been exhibited worldwide at festivals and museums.

Denisa Kera is a philosopher and designer based in Singapore and Prague working on open science and citizen science issues. She is involved in various open hardware projects with emphasis on supporting research infrastructure in the Global South.

 

 

 The renowned scholar, writer and curator RYSZARD W. KLUSZCZYNSKI  is one of the pioneers in the field of new media arts. Coming from  experimental cinema, video art and media theory, in the 1990s his studies  focused on the development of the art of moving pictures in the era of electronics.

Tamiko Thiel is a border-crosser and an explorer of virtual space.

 

 

Scenocosme Collective is known for its inimitable poetic language of visualization and sonification of interrelations between humans and nature.
