Description
In the search for new forms of urbanity the influence of media
technologies on the perception of and on the engagement with social constructed spaces becomes evident. Under the conditions of telecommunication, digital networks, distributed production systems, global financial markets the traditional concept of city as a spatial, temporal and political defined place cannot be any longer circumscribed within the dimension of the local. Knowbotic Research investigated in several mega-cities together with young urban planners, economists, political theorists the specific cultural and political interrelationships of city, work, public sphere and electronic networks. Starting from local workshops (software
concepts, theoretical constructions, urban readings) the
interdisciplinary participants developed online-cartographies (mental maps) which were collaboratively exchanged and reworked in networked processes enabled by groupware environments. The cartographies consisted of collaboratively organized textual, visual and auditive materials, whose relationships between the participants where visualised as force
fields and intensities through visual attractor and clustering systems. Knowbotic Research developed a special physical feedback interface to deal with these online cartographies and their force fields. The interface, in the shape of an architectural construction and drawing table, interpreted the complex relationships of the urban data sets in the cartographies as magnetic force fields and enabled a sensual experience via a handhold magnet which could be moved over the projection surface of the data visualisations.
