Description
In this interactive installation, three viewers are able to manipulate components of a computer-generated image using multi-axis joysticks positioned in front of a projection screen. The image is a half octagonal cylinder that is divided into three intricate parts, each controlled by one of the joysticks. Like a three dimensional puzzle, these parts are moved about in the virtual image space creating an almost infinite variety of configurations.
The three parts are uniformly grey - when they are being interactively moved each part assume a specific color: cyan, magenta and yellow. A three dimensional sound map is related to the spatial location and orientation of the image components. Each part has its associated sound frequency, which is modulated in volume and pitch as the viewer moves it. Thus both image and sound are together being interactively 'composed' by the viewers.
The image is projected onto three curved sheet metal surfaces whose galvanized crystalline structure focuses the projected light into the central area of each viewer's point of view. This results in a contingency of vision where the luminous images appear to detach themselves from the screen. The viewer is also able to switch at any time from solid model to a wire frame representation, thus exposing a further level of ambivalent transparency of the object.
