Description
Mixed reality installation

'COMBATscience Augmented' reimagines the 2008 multimedia environment 'COMBATscience', realised in cooperation with Cathrin Pichler in the Volkstheater in Vienna, and transforms it into another sensory setting. The life stories of scientist Fritz Haber (1868–1934) and his wife, the chemist Clara Immerwahr (1870–1915), serve as the background from which different scenarios are developed. The scenarios address issues of scientific responsibility and its place between feasibility thinking and research ethics.
Fritz Haber and Clara Immerwahr were a couple with opposing mindsets: In World War I, Haber employed his knowledge as the head designer of German gas warfare; Immerwahr, a pacifist, committed suicide following the first gas attack by German forces. The spouses' estrangement had already begun far earlier: The ambitious Clara Immerwahr, one of the first women with a doctoral degree in Germany, was nudged out of her laboratory and pushed into the role of wife and assistant.
Whereas at the Volkstheater, visitors were led through a 50-minute performative collage, now viewers navigate between condensed stations of the storyline using wireless data goggles (HoloLens). Digital holographic miniatures and scenarios unfold, intertwining with the real surroundings. In contrast to the atmosphere of the theatre, this installation is experienced from an individual viewpoint.
