Taihu rocks are rare because they have been sculpted by nature over hundreds of millions of years. It has been the object of affection for Chinese literati because the form, character, and aura of such a rock cannot be made by man - its energy is "unreplicable." After many centuries of quarrying, it is rare now to find stones in Lake Taihu, and the next major seismic change must occur before they can be obtained again. Because the process is so long that hundreds of generations will pass before that day, artist Zhan Wang has created a machine that will produce real Taihu rocks in under one hour using natural processes. Although his generator is man-made, he is still able to achieve an effect like that of nature.
