Comment: The guiding theme of EMAF 2004 triggered numerous associations: transmitters, emitters, carriers or x-mitters – visualised by all kinds of dove species depicted on the festival’s posters, billboards and catalogues this year.In line with this motto, the exhibition focused on two different aspects of Media Art: firstly, interactivity, i.e. the viewer’s active involvement in the creative process – not only in the actual exhibition halls, but also in public spaces in Osnabrück city centre – and, secondly, technical innovation. The installations made use of state-of-the-art technology, which may well soon be a part of our everyday lives.Amongst other things, the congress that accompanied the festival was dedicated to the new EU Member States – Slovenia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and the Baltic States; experts explained the role played by Media Art in each of the countries.In 2004, contributions to the film programme competed for the first time for the €5000 "EMAF Award" for a pioneering work of Media Art.
