In 1996, the festival was still held in September, unlike later, when it was traditionally held in spring.This year, the film programme was put together in cooperation with the Swiss Film, Video and Multimedia Festival VIPER. It presented interesting impulses from numerous international film and video artists. Performances by the Argentine performance and theatre group De La Guarda, which gave its only guest performance in Germany at EMAF, and the popular group NVA from Glasgow were amongst the highlights of the 1996 festival. "Telepolis Newsroom" and "Of(f) The W.W.(Web)" were two projects that presented online and offline works with the intention of making the internet jungle more transparent. The retrospective screened works by the film and computer artist John Whitney, who died shortly before the festival.Cologne-based NCC Cultur Concept GmbH coorganised EMAF 1996.
