This year, EMAF took a look beneath the "surface" and shed light on the handling of media from a variety of perspectives.No- und low-budget productions from the independent scene met films and videos produced with commercial cinema and television in mind. Furthermore, to mark the 500 year celebrations of the "discovery" of America, a country special was screened containing films and videos from Latin America and Spain. A comprehensive programme also provided a forum for art from former Czechoslovakia where a particularly art- and culture-friendly climate prevailed following the democratic process. This year was the first time that the festival team prioritised contextual and aesthetic similarities over format- and material-related division, as practised in the past, when putting together the film programmes. Using this approach, a total of 110 experimental feature films, documentaries, contextual and formal experiments, video clips and computer animations were screened in colourful and varied programmes at EMAF 1991.
