In September 1989, for the second time Osnabrück hosted the European Media Art Festival, a forum that aimed to show and create free artistic spaces. Against the backdrop of media history, the intention of EMAF was to critically reflect upon the claim and practice of artistic work, and to question aesthetic qualities. With programme structures open to international contributions, the festival used means from audiovisual arts to question the increasing internationalisation of economic, political and mass media structures, as well as the increasing interlinking of the systems.The active, controversial and creative involvement of the artists, experts and guests who had travelled to the festival made a decisive contribution to shaping EMAF’s programme.
