The European Media Art Festival was held under this name for the first time in the European Film and Television Year of 1988. The concept envisaged offering visitors and participating artists an informative programme by jointly presenting different media and approaches. Developments evolving from the mutual influence of art, culture, society and technology were also to be highlighted. Current tendencies in the area of experimental and ambitious media work were demonstrated at EMAF 1988, and technical innovations were questioned with regard to their formal and contextual motivation. Reconciliation between art and technology, often discussed as opposite poles, was already perceptible at this point in time: artists discovered new technologies whilst scientists and technicians turned their attention to art.An 11-day programme with numerous premieres offering an overview of past film, video and media works was created from over 500 independently submitted contributions and works viewed in the countries where they were made.
