Artist and filmmaker William Kentridge has earned international acclaim for creating distinctive animated films that address the political and cultural climate of his native South Africa. In Tide Table (recently acquired by The Rose), the artist contemplates for the first time the devastating impact HIV and AIDS has had on South Africa. Characters from previous Kentridge films return in Tide Table. The ruthless industrialist Soho Eckstein, for example, reads a newspaper on the beach, seemingly oblivious to the post-Apartheid struggles that surround him.Kentridge is one of the most highly-regarded artists working today. His unique animation style derives from a creative process of drawing, altering, and erasing. In addition to films, the artist's media include drawings, paper cut-outs, and sculpture. This past January, a major retrospective survey of his work showed at the Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea, Rivoli-Turin. It is now touring to international venues, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and the MusC)e d'art Contemporain de Montreal. (Source: Rose Art Museum)
