About

Alexander Hahn (b. 1954, Rapperswil, Switzerland) has worked in the analog and digital media arts since 1977, integrating the time-based forms of video with practices of installation, computer imagery, print, animation, virtual reality and writing. A graduate of the Zurich University of Arts with a degree in art education (1979), he participated in the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in New York (1981). He lives and works in Zurich and New York.

The subject of Hahn’s work is the everyday. Always a video camera at hand, he collects day-to-day records, often randomly. He then processes these recordings on a computer, creating art that seamlessly intertwines the personal and the universal. These works merge imagination, memory, and dream with elements of science and history, unveiling the remarkable and extraordinary aspects inherent in our everyday lives..

Hahn's work has been seen in museums and media festivals worldwide, from New York to Zurich, Sydney to Berlin, Beijing to New Delhi, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, International Center of Photography in New York, Kunsthaus Zürich, Kunstmuseum Bern, Musée Jenisch in Vevey, Musée Pompidou in Paris, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Villa Croce in Genova, National Art Museum of China in Beijing. He's had major retrospectives at the Kunstmuseum Solothurn, Museum der Moderne, Salzburg, Austria, and the Padiglione d'Arte Moderna in Ferrara, Italy. Recently, the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen presented an extensive survey of his work, entitled Memory of Light - Light of Memory (Oct 28, 2022 - Apr 02, 2023).

Hahn is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Production Grant of the Canton St. Gallen in 2015, Cultural Prize of the City of Rapperswil in 2011, Cultural Award of the Canton of St. Gallen in 2009, Media Production Grant of the New York State Council on the Arts in 2008, the namics Art Prize in 2002, the Prize for Young Swiss Art in 1995, the Swiss National Grant in 1993, DAAD Fellowship in 1993.

Hahn's work can be found in the collections of Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, ZKM | Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, UBS Art Collection, New York, WGBH Boston, Collection Nestlé, Vevey, Kunstmuseum Solothurn, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Kunstzeughaus Rapperswil

In addition to reviews in ZKM Mediagramm, Art Papers, Radio WBAI, NY, Huffington Post, Il Manifesto, Basler Zeitung, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Tagesanzeiger, Berliner Zeitung, Kunstbulletin and others, various monographs have been published, most notably Alexander Hahn - Works 1976-2007, Kehrer Verlag, Heidelberg in 2007 and Astral Memories of a Flying Man, Musée Jenisch, Vevey in 2002)

There are two documentaries about his work: 3 Approaches by Matthias Behrens in 1994 and Words of Artists/Portraits of Artists by Catherine Gfeller in 2012.
