Sean Cubitt is Professor of Film and Television and co-Head of the Department of Media and Communications at Goldsmiths, University of London; Professorial Fellow of the University of Melbourne and Honorary Professor of the University of Dundee. His publications include Timeshift: On Video Culture, Videography: Video Media as Art and Culture, Digital Aesthetics, Simulation and Social Theory, The Cinema Effect, EcoMedia and his most recent book, The Practice of Light (MIT 2014). He has recently co-edited Rewind: British Video Art of the 1970s and 80s, Relive: Media Art History, Ecocinema: Theory and Practice and the open access anthology Digital Light. He is the series editor for Leonardo Books at MIT Press. His current research is on environmental impacts of digital media and on media arts and their history.

Goldsmiths Inaugural Lectures 2015: Sean Cubitt

As part of the Media & Communications series of Inaugural Lectures, the Warden has invited Sean Cubitt, Professor of Film and Television, to give his Inaugural Lecture – the title of the Lecture is “Political Aesthetics: Becoming Human". What is the internet made of? How does it work? In a time when politics is played out through media, how do the design and materials of media influence and constrain what we think of as politics? This talk asks whether the traditional questions of aesthetics about truth, beauty and the good can also be applied to the conduct of political life. Can ecology teach us new ways to think about both politics and aesthetics, new ways to be human?
