Born in the Japanese city of Fukuoka, media artist Naoko Tosa was awarded a PhD for Art and Technology research by the University of Tokyo in 1999. She gained experience as a lecturer at Musashino Art University in Tokyo from 1989 to 1994. After working as senior researcher at Media Integration & Communication Research Labs from 1995 to 2001, Tosa became a fellow at the Centre for Advanced Visual Studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Since 2005 she holds a professorship at the Academic Centre for Computing and Media Studies at Kyoto University. Additionally Tosa is a visiting research professor at the National University of Singapore.
According to the artist’s homepage, Naoko Tosa’s heterogeneous oeuvre consists of “Photography Art”, “Media Art”, “Sculpture & Scroll”, “Software Art” and “Video Art”. Amongst her latest works are photographic pieces like “Sanctuary”, “Private Identity: John Lennon” or “Private Identity: Michael Jacson” and the three-minute computer graphics movie “Under water Sansui with Four Gods”, which was shown to a wider audience at the Korean Expo Digital Gallery in 2012.
