Peter Weibel is an artist, theorist, musician, curator and educator. He is Director and CEO of the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe. Weibel developed an artistic practice on experimental literature and performance working in film, video, interactive electronic environments. He critically approach their function for the construction of reality and work on the notion of ""expanded cinema,"" which deconstructed the ideological and technical conditions of cinematic representation. He take early part on Vienna Group and the Vienna activism and co-founded Hotel Morphila orchestra. With his ""tele actions,"" made public by the Austrian television (ORF)in 1972, exceeds the limits of the gallery space and examines the video technology in their application in the mass medium of television. As a theorist and curator, he is committed to art history, taking into account the history of technology and science. Works on the classic genres of art - painting and sculpture and writes about young artists as well as forgotten protagonists. While doing this, he discovered the art world again. In his role as a teacher at universities and longtime head of institutions such as the Ars Electronica, Linz, the Institute for New Media in Frankfurt, and the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe he influenced particularly the European scene of media art through conferences, exhibitions and publications.
