My particular expertise in the history of computer and digital art began in 2002 when I joined an AHRC-funded research group at Birkbeck College, University of London – The CACHe Project (Computer Arts, Contexts, Histories, etc), which investigated the origins of British digital arts from the 1960s to 1980. During the period 2002 to 2006 I identified, located and interviewed over 60 British pioneers. Outcomes of this project include two books and Bits in Motion, a film screening and panel discussion event of early British computer animation at the National Film Theatre (NFT), London. As part of this project I assisted in the re-formation of the UK-based, Computer Arts Society, an artist-led organisation originally founded in 1968, the art and archives of which were donated to the Victoria & Albert Museum London.
My current research focus is George Mallen and the early Computer Arts Society exhibitions Event One (1969) and Interact (1973), the computing work of the pioneering artist Gustav Metzger, and the history of digital arts education with particular reference to art schools. I also write for Studio International.
